Abstract

Objectives: This research was conducted to indentify the status of oral care services in nursery schools including teachers" knowledge and behavior, guidelines, and education for teachers.

Methods: A self-administered questionnaire survey in 42 nursery schools located in Buk-gu, Daegu was conducted from April 8 to April 28, 2012, and 193 nursery school teachers completed the questionnaire.

Results: The average score for knowledge and behavior on oral health was 12.3 points out of 20 and 40.5 out of 6. respectively. Teachers who attended oral health education programs scored higher for knowledge and behavior.
Some teachers showed inadequate behaviors for oral health care: 4.1% of the teachers answered they don"t have children toothbrush after lunch; 22.8% provide sweets as rewards. Only 32.5% have children toothbrush after snacks, for which lack of time was responsible in most cases.
Teacher"s participation in oral health education is statistically relevant to their attention toward children"s tooth brushing behaviors like frequency, cleanness, and brushing methods, Any guidelines for children"s oral health in nursery schools improves the health care service. Most of the nursery teachers needed oral health education and preferred a personnel from public health centers as educator. Tooth brushing method was the most frequently requested subject for education.

Conclusions: In conclusion, it will be necessary to establish and improve proper policies so that nursery school teachers can take appropriate oral health education and nursery schools be provided with guidelines for children"s oral health care.
